
E3SL Peer Mentor Program
The E3-STEM Student Leader Peer Mentor Program is designed to help new STEM students adjust to the college experience and feel connected to the Rutgers-Camden community. Freshman Student Leaders will be paired with an upperclassman peer mentor, who will provide support during their first semesters.

Starting college can be stressful. From trying to navigate a new campus, to keeping up with continuous coursework, to struggling to make new friends, adjusting to college life can feel overwhelming. While there are countless campus resources to help you in their academic and personal spheres, one of the best ways to learn how to adjust at Rutgers-Camden is learn from students who have been in your place. The E3-STEM Student Leader Peer Mentor program is designed to pair new, incoming E3-STEM Student Leaders with successful upperclassman students who can connect with and help guide new students during their first year.
E3-STEM Peer Mentors are undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and are experts at all things Rutgers-Camden. Whether you need help developing study skills, navigating the dining hall, or joining a student organization, your peer mentor will be able to answer any questions that you have. Mentors and mentees will spend time together throughout the year, attending campus events and setting up meetings to discuss academic and personal growth. E3-STEM’s peer mentor program is designed to help students increase their confidence, improve their professional skills, and expand their personal network, for mentor and mentees alike.

Mentors have the opportunity to connect with new students and help them adjust to their first year at RUC. Benefits of being a mentor include: building a professional network, gaining leadership experience, enhancing communication and time-management skills, improving communication skills, expanding professional resume, gaining access to exclusive mentoring events and unique SWAG, and more!

GUIDE FOR MENTORS



Being a peer mentor is more than a job; it is an experience that will enhance your personal and professional development. As a peer mentor, you will build your network, develop your leadership skills, improve your communication skills, among other meaningful benefits.
The following are expectations of the program:
- Mentors will meet with mentees and attend at least one campus event together each month
- Mentors will “connect” with mentees for at least one hour a month [connecting can mean in-person meetings, attending a campus event or activity, or maintaining regular contact (email, text, social media) ]
- Mentors will complete a monthly log to document experiences and conversations
- Mentors will fill out a mid-semester check-in survey each semester to discuss program experiences with the E3-STEM Team
- Mentors will attend all required training sessions and will complete all program evaluations
Peer mentors will be interviewed by E3-STEM staff to better understand your commitments, engagements, and career goals. Mentors will be partnered with a mentee with similar interests or goals.
Skills and attributes of a great mentor:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrate independence and leadership skills
- Ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Desire to have an impact on the experience of new students
- Must have reasonable availability during fall and spring semester
GUIDE FOR MENTEES



Freshmen Student Leaders will be paired with an upperclassman peer mentor, who will serve as role models for new students. Mentors will meet with mentees regularly and help mentees adjust to the rigor of college coursework and introduce them to the campus community.
Examples of support provided by Peer Mentors:
- Attending campus and community events
- Answering questions about campus life, academic resources, the local Camden area, and other support areas
- Serving as a support system, helping mentees to balance academic life with personal responsibilities
- Introducing mentees to a network of individuals, including friends, classmates, advisors, faculty, and more
- Learning about study skills, time management and communication skills, and general life skills
- Checking in about course registration and homework deadlines
Mentees will take an intake survey as part of their acceptance into the E3-STEM Student Leader Program. Mentees will be partnered with a mentor with similar interests or goals. New E3-STEM Student Leaders will automatically be enrolled in the Peer Mentor Program.
Mentees will be asked to fill out a mid-semester check-in survey each semester to discuss program experiences with the E3-STEM Team.
